What Is Aspect Ratio?
Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, video, or screen. It's expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9), representing the ratio of width to height. Maintaining correct aspect ratios is essential in web design, video production, and photography to prevent distortion when resizing or displaying content on different screens.
Most Common Aspect Ratios
16:9 is the standard for HD and 4K video, most modern monitors, and YouTube. 4:3 was the standard for older TVs and many digital cameras. 1:1 (square) is used for Instagram posts and profile pictures. 9:16 is used for vertical video on TikTok, Instagram Stories, and YouTube Shorts. 3:2 is the native ratio of most DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
Scaling Images Without Distortion
When resizing images for different contexts, always scale proportionally by changing one dimension and calculating the other based on the aspect ratio. Our scale calculator does this automatically — enter the original dimensions and the new width or height you need, and it calculates the corresponding dimension to maintain the exact same proportions without stretching or squishing.
