Password Strength Checker – How Secure Is Your Password?

Our password strength checker analyzes your password against multiple security criteria including length, character variety, entropy, and common pattern detection. It provides an estimated crack time based on modern brute-force attack speeds.

What Makes a Strong Password?

  • Length: Each additional character multiplies the number of possible combinations. 12+ characters is strongly recommended.
  • Character variety: Use uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Each category added dramatically increases complexity.
  • No dictionary words: Hackers use dictionary attacks first. Avoid real words, names, and dates.
  • No predictable patterns: Avoid "123", "abc", "qwerty", and keyboard walks.
  • Uniqueness: Never reuse passwords across accounts. A breach of one service exposes all accounts with the same password.

Password Security Best Practices

  1. Use a password manager (LastPass, Bitwarden, 1Password) to generate and store unique passwords.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all important accounts.
  3. Consider using a passphrase — 4 random words joined together (e.g., "PurpleBananaCloudRocket") are both memorable and very strong.
  4. Change passwords immediately after any security breach notification.
  5. Never share passwords via email, SMS, or chat.

About Password Entropy

Entropy (measured in bits) represents the unpredictability of your password. Higher entropy = more difficult to crack. The formula is: Entropy = log₂(charset_size^length). A password with 80+ bits of entropy is considered very strong against current computing capabilities.
