Standard Tipping Guidelines
Tipping customs vary by location and service type. In the United States: Restaurants: 15–20% for standard service, 20–25% for excellent service. Fast food: not typically expected, but 10% is appreciated. Food delivery: 15–20% of the order total. Taxi/rideshare: 15–20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Hairdressers/barbers: 15–20%. Always tip based on the pre-tax amount.
Splitting Bills Fairly
When splitting a bill among a group, our calculator divides both the bill and tip evenly among all parties. If different people ordered different amounts, you may want to tip on each person's individual subtotal rather than the total. In that case, calculate each person's portion separately using the individual bill amounts.
